Susan Glaspell's role in the literary scene is often understood to have begun with her entrance to New York's Greenwich Village as part of a cast of eccentric radicals who were challenging the status quo in art and politics. But a recent biography emphasizes that, long before that time, Glaspell was already a successful writer. She sold short stories for top dollar to major magazines and was able to live in Paris for a year on the sales of her first, best-selling novet. When she landed in New York in 1913, her reputation had preceded her.
