Inspired by her success, Dorothea Dix visited prisons in other states as well. After she prepared reports demanding justice for the mentally ill, those states also created special mental hospitals. Dix continued campaigning for reform for the rest of her life. By the time she died in 1887, state governments no longer put debtors in prison. Most had created special justice systems for children in trouble. Dix had shown that with enough courage and dedication, reformers—including women—could lead society to make significant changes.
