Expository writing is used to explain, describe, or convey information to the reader. Not all expository writing follows the same formula, but it should always include these same important elements. First, an expository essay should begin with an introduction, in which the writer introduces the topic and gives the thesis. A thesis statement states the central idea of the essay. Next come the body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should contain a main topic that supports the central idea and should offer evidence and information to explain these main topics. Finally, the essay should end with a conclusion that restates each specific main topic and the central idea.
